About: |
Let's step back in time, back to around 1988. That was the year I met Cheri, and the next 7 years in our lives were to become some of the best. You remember Swanie from I still miss you. The 3 of us used to hang out together whenever we had the chance. It was mostly during the summers, because Cheri moved back to Germany after primary school, but spend most her summers in Denmark.
We managed to create many dear memories in those days. I'm sure you know what it's like when you hear a piece of music in the radio, and it reminds you of sweet old times? Well, there are quite a few pieces that remind me of the sweet old days with Cheri and Swanie. And listening to that music always gives the bittersweet taste of nostalgia.
But after 1995 we slowly lost contact. Swanie had pasted away, and I think that Cheri and I somehow reminded each other of Swanie just by being together. There was no trio no more, and that was very sad. Perhaps we chose to part from each other, without wanting to admit it to ourselves.
Years went by, and I missed Cheri quite a lot, more as time went by. I guess it's true what Bazz Luhrman says in "Everybody's free": "The older you get, the more you'll need the people you knew when you were young". As time went by, I lost 2 more friends that were somehow connected with memories of Cheri. I was beginning to fear that Cheri also might have left this world, because if she had - who would tell me? I tried to find her several times by searching the net, contacting her old friends etc, without result. But I guess I knew it was a question of her finding me. I was easy to find online. She was not.
Little did I know that she too had been missing me and thought a lot about the sweet old times. But she never was much of a technical person, so it wasn't until Friday the 22nd of July 2005 she got connected to the internet, where she did a search for me. She found me quickly and I received word from her Monday the 25th.
Words cannot begin to describe what it's like to hear from a dear old friend like that after 10 years. We have been mailing since that day, exchanging memories and pictures of our world as it existed 15 years ago.
"The Return" is an artistic dance track that tells the story of all this. Enjoy.

This piece is so stuffed with artistic flair you’ll probably think I've lost my mind.
From the beginning the hihats and bongo drums are switching between left and right speaker. This symbolizes me searching, and the result/lack of result it gave each time. The music enhances 15 seconds after, and symbolizes the search getting more serious. The shattering glass represents long lost emotions breaking loose. At 0:30 the synth joins in, symbolizing communication is going on when I received her mail. But I was in doubt if it was really her, because the mail was written in English, and we always used to write in Danish or German. So I held back the excitement, expressed by the music pausing at 0:46. I had to ask one single check-question to make sure it was really her, and not someone playing a trick on me. The synth reappears at 0:53 symbolizing communication is going on, but with caution. When replying with correct answers (in correct language I might add), there was no doubt. This was my long lost friend, and contact had been re-established. This is expressed at 1:01 when another hihat enters the music and lifts up the rhythm. At the same time there is a pause in the synths, symbolizing a minor shock about the fact that we finally succeeded in finding each other again after all these years. Then we began mailing and talking on the phone, exchanging info about our current situation in life. Two instruments; an organ and a square synth represents each of us. At 1:14 these instruments “talk” with each other in each speaker. It goes on after 1:32, but the subject changes into memories and nostalgia – the synth joins in again. Bringing all the memories back to life, literally made me step into my old self, remembering more and more – the places we stayed at, what we had to eat and drink, even the scent in the air. So at 1:55 the music changes into a dream dance kinda style, with more atmosphere. Rhythm holds back to enhance the relaxing state of mind. At 2:25 rhythm rejoins to express joy, when we take a journey into a world of bittersweet memories together. (Nostalgia rules). At 2:52 the music slowly disappears, because while we're flying away you are staying behind. (Sorry mate, perhaps some other time ;-)
